“Guides” explores in a creative way the responses of the artist Cristiano Mangovo to the exercise of the balance of power (and its contradictions) between a society that is constantly changing and the questioning of this same society. Committed to the main specific issues of the context in which it operates, such as environmental protection, women’s rights, or on topics such as consumerism, human values, social relations or urbanism, the artist has as framework the urban landscape and scenes of everyday life. Development is linked to human and social values, as evolution is linked to technology and knowledge. In this balance (or imbalance), the artist proposes a closer look at the consequences that are intrinsically linked: games of power, manipulation, unbridled consumerism, violence and paternalism, but also energy, light and the memory of a past that exists in a modern system and evolutionary.
Mangovo presents in this exhibition 27 paintings and 3 sculptures in a collection that covers different periods of maturation, technique and style. “Guides” brings us also the more contemporary side of the artist, expressed in the hyperrealism style and in the more global themes, which, through the notion of “motorman” as metaphor, refers us to the importance of autonomy and independence, above all in thought (“I want”) and the urgency of development.
