“What is being Global?” Is the title of the most recent exhibition by the artist Daniela Ribeiro that proposes a reflection on this question: Can a community, whose past has been erased and whose energies are consumed by the search for legible traces of its history, imagine possible futures on a global level? Either notions of legacy, memory, archive, identity are here posited as catapults of a past into one or several predictions of a future, but into a future that fits into a wider context on a global scale. In this exhibition, the artist presents / displays about 15 works of different dimensions, product of a digital work and multimedia fragmented, pieces of mobile phones, constant in their works, and of epoxy resins, PVC and vinyl. The characters, all of whom appear to be coming from a supernatural future, embody the stigmata of technology but add to it the strand that binds them to the natural world and humanity itself. Elements of science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and magical realism with non-Western cosmologies are combined in order to critique not only the current dilemmas of Africans, but also to review, interrogate, and re-examine the historical events of the past.
